The Edinburgh festival on less than £50 a day
Edinburgh Festival opens tomorrow and with ticket sales tipped to top 2m prices for travel and a room have hit the roof. So what is still available? We have some insider tips
Edinburgh: Prices are sky-high with the event expected to sell more than 2m tickets. Photograph: Murdo Macleod The world's greatest arts festival begins tomorrow and runs until 30 August, seemingly defying the economic downturn with a record 2,453 shows running over four weeks. Last year ticket sales topped 1.85m and this year may even break 2m. But record numbers spell sky-high prices as visitors jostle for the few remaining hotel rooms – and long queues outside the best restaurants. In spite of the crowds, Guardian Money was still able to track down bargains for last-minute festival-goers. But we don't pretend this list is exhaustive: if you have any Edinburgh money-savers why don't you post them below.
from WikIT http://www.informationtamers.com/WikIT/index.php?title=Backing_up_mindmapping Buzan Online has responded to criticism of a lack of academic studies showing the efficacy of mindmapping with a list of references on this page . None of the papers are linked to there, it's just a plain text list (Why Mr. Buzan? If you claim "Here's all the evidence you need!", don't you think that transparency is called for?). So WikIT has done the work for them by, as far as we can, gathering the links here for review. Mind mapping deserves academic backup as solid as that of concept mapping, assuming studies of a sufficient standard to provide evidence can be found, not just anecdotes. But before we look at that list, we need to consider "efficacy of mindmapping" for what? Mindmapping, as this wiki shows, is used as a tool in a wide range of activities. All the Buzan Online references focus on learning and memory with no mention of the use of mind mapping f...
http://scientopia.org/blogs/scicurious/2010/08/23/back-to-basics-1-neurotransmission/ from Back to Basics 1: Neurotransmission! Aug 23 2010 Published by scicurious under Basic Science Posts , Neuroscience , Uncategorized First in our back to basics series, a very important topic indeed. Neurotransmission is at the basis of everything you read about MRI, neural circuitry, how areas of the brain communicate...basically a LOT of neuroscience requires that you know something about neurotransmission. I suppose I thought for a while that if I was talking about dopamine and serotonin and GABA and things enough, people would just kind of "get" neurotransmission. And most people do. But it's still a good thing to cover, partially because it's kind of mind boggling to think about (well, Sci finds it mind-boggling), and partially because it helps you understand why changes in receptors, changes in transporters, or changes in release will have different effects. This com...
http://blogs.hbr.org/cs/2013/05/idea_entrepreneur_the_new_21st.html There is a new player emerging on the cultural and business scene today: the idea entrepreneur. Perhaps you are one yourself — or would like to be. The idea entrepreneur is an individual, usually a content expert and often a maverick, whose main goal is to influence how other people think and behave in relation to their cherished topic. These people don't seek power over others and they're not motivated by the prospect of achieving great wealth. Their goal is to make a difference, to change the world in some way. Idea entrepreneurs are popping up everywhere. They're people like Sheryl Sandberg (Facebook COO and author of Lean In ), who is advocating a big new idea from within an organization. And like Atul Gawande (the checklist doctor), who is working to transform a professional discipline. Or like Blake Mycoskie (founder of TOMS shoes), who has created an unconventional business model. ...
