Edinburgh Festival opens tomorrow and with ticket sales tipped to top 2m prices for travel and a room have hit the roof. So what is still available? We have some insider tips

The world's greatest arts festival begins tomorrow and runs until 30 August, seemingly defying the economic downturn with a record 2,453 shows running over four weeks. Last year ticket sales topped 1.85m and this year may even break 2m. But record numbers spell sky-high prices as visitors jostle for the few remaining hotel rooms – and long queues outside the best restaurants. In spite of the crowds, Guardian Money was still able to track down bargains for last-minute festival-goers.
